In the ever-evolving landscape of skincare, one technique has emerged as a holy grail for achieving clear, radiant skin: double cleansing. This transformative method, deeply rooted in the skincare rituals of East Asia, has gained widespread popularity across the globe for its efficacy in purifying the skin and unlocking its natural glow.
It goes without saying that you need to remove what’s on your face before you start your evening routine.
This is your first cleanse to remove makeup and SPF as well as environmental contaminants. You don’t need to complicate it by trying to find specific or fancy makeup cleansers. Just clean your face well and remove the cleanser and impurities. Oil based cleansers and balms are the raved about product at the moment, but a creamy/milky cleanser works really well also.
To keep it simple you can use the same gentle cleanser for the first and second cleanse.
The second cleanser could also be where you use a cleanser with a specific job which is part of the normal evening routine.
- Very dry and dehydrated skin requires calm, gentle, creamy, hydrating cleansers like ‘Neat & Tidy’. Used for first and second cleanse.
- Irritated acne or rosacea prone skin would use ‘Neat & Tidy’ for both cleanses. Why? Because the irritation requires calming, acids are not required at the moment.

- Of course if acne prone skin is not inflamed or irritated that is a good point to use an exfoliating cleanser as a second cleanse to remove keratin, dead skin cells, clean pores of sebum etc. ‘Fresh & Tidy’ is a gently foaming exfoliating and degreasing cleanser.
- Ageing or pigmented skin would use ‘Neat & Tidy’ for makeup removal and then ‘Clean & Tidy’ (exfoliating cleanser with glycolic and salicylic acid) for removal of dead skin cells (and all of the other benefits of course).
- In all cases the second cleanse is where you should spend the time and effort.
How to double cleanse
- In the bathroom near the sink
- Hair back
- Apply cleanser on to dry skin and rub with fingers in all areas for couple of minutes (gimmicky brushes and tools not required) A splash of water can be added later to milk/gently foam up
- Take your time to massage each cleanser onto damp skin using gentle, circular motions. This helps to thoroughly emulsify and dissolve impurities without causing friction or irritation

- Remove with clean flannel or cloth with luke warm water. Ensure all cleanser and impurities removed. Avoid using hot water, as it can strip the skin of its natural oils and lead to dehydration
- Change cleaning cloths daily
- When cleansing is followed by hyaluronic acid serums or moisturisers these can be applied straight onto damp skin
- When followed by an active ingredient such as retinol allow the skin to air dry before applying
the benefits of double cleansing
- Double cleansing ensures a thorough and deep cleanse, preventing clogged pores, breakouts, and dullness.
- By eliminating layers of impurities, double cleansing enhances the skin’s ability to absorb subsequent skincare products, such as serums, moisturisers, and treatments, maximizing their efficacy.
- Regular double cleansing promotes a clear, radiant complexion by unclogging pores, refining skin texture, and revealing a smoother, more luminous skin surface.
- Contrary to popular belief, double cleansing does not strip the skin of its natural oils. Instead, it helps to maintain the skin’s hydration levels, leaving it balanced, nourished, and refreshed.
- Double cleansing is particularly effective for removing long-wearing makeup, waterproof sunscreen, and other stubborn impurities that traditional cleansers may leave behind.

Double cleansing is more than just a skincare trend; it’s a transformative ritual that can elevate your skincare routine to new heights.
By harnessing the power of two complementary cleansers, you can effectively purify your skin, unlock its natural radiance, and achieve the healthy, glowing complexion you deserve.
