What product is used?
In clinic we use ‘Raffine’ which is a medical CE certified automatic microneedle therapy system.
The Raffine automatic microneedling device is far more advanced than MTS (Dermaroller Type needling). Clinical studies have also shown that to be more effective than ablative treatments like some laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels.
How does Skin microneedling/Collagen Induction Therapy work?
Skin needling or ‘microneedling’ is a procedure where superficial micropunctures are created using miniature fine needles. A controlled skin injury with minimal superficial bleeding is made without damaging the epidermis/dermis.
The aim of the treatment is to stimulate skin cells such as keratinocytes, melanocytes and fibroblast cells to improve their function.
Microneedling is an evidence-based treatment. Various studies and different theories exist to support its efficacy. One principle is that tiny puncture wounds goes through the same wound healing cascade as a larger wound causing tissue remodelling. Another notion is that needles breakdown old hardened scar strands allowing them to revascularize. It is also thought that needles increase the inner electrical membrane potential of cells which triggers the release of various growth factors leading to the migration of fibroblasts to the site of injury, and hence, collagen induction. Thus, the needles do not create a wound in a real sense, but rather body cells are fooled into believing that the injury has occurred.
Using skin needling consistently triggers the body’s repair process until the desired level of skin rejuvenation is achieved. Microneedling results in the production of new collagen and elastin, improvement in skin tone and texture, firmness, fine lines and wrinkles as well as reduction in scars and pore size.
Traditionally a professional or home dermaroller has been used over the past decade. It has evolved to an automated vibrating microneedling device which looks like a pen.
How popular is this treatment?
This treatment is very popular as it creates dermal damage without removal of the healthy epidermis which means that (compared to some resurfacing treatments such as laser) the healing time is rapid, does not cause any comparable pain and results are quick, long lasting and cost effective.
